Minocqua is centrally located in the northern region of Wisconsin. This ideal placement welcomes the curious traveler to explore beyond the tree-lined boundaries of the town. While staying at Nitschke's Northern Resort, guests have raved over the variety of day trips available to them in the area.
We've taken the liberty to compile a small handful of the places we've heard about, and experienced ourselves, the most. Our resort is a year-round, 4-seasons resort, therefore some of the following destinations are for fall/winter travel while others are best enjoyed during the spring/summer months. Let's explore!
Manitowish Waters Cranberry Farms
As cranberries are Wisconsin's state fruit, account for over 50% of the cranberries grown in the USA and are farmed in 20 of our 72 counties, it seems only fitting that we'd begin our journey in a town just 25 miles from Minocqua that's known for their cranberry marshes. Manitowish Waters is a great place to tour the unique system of growing and harvesting cranberries, especially mid-to-late fall. Many farms have been in family ownership for 4 or more generations, with "old school" harvesting techniques handed down year-after-year. A day trip to this town and you'll walk away with a newfound appreciation for cranberry farmers and at least one new cranberry-filled sweet treat!
Rhinelander - Hodag Country
Just 25 miles away, Rhinelander, Wisconsin boasts one of the largest music shin-digs in Northern Wisconsin. Every July, tens of thousands of excited fans flock to the annual Hodag Country Music Festival. A tradition established in 1978, this massive festival has continued to be a favorite for anyone in the region who loves country music. Top performers in the past have included Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Reba McEntire, to name just a few. While some stay on the fairgrounds camping, others know better and stay with us all week long in the cozy, DRY and very comfortable cabins we have to offer!
Tomahawk - Harley Ride and Fundraiser
Every September, over 40,000 motorcycle enthusiasts flood the small town of Tomahawk in search of a great time. Heavily sponsored by Harley Davidson, the motorcycle manufacturer showcases all the newest trends available while helping to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At just 30 miles away, many guests are happy to catch a few zzz's at our resort without the loud roar of thousands of bikers outside their windows.
Boulder Junction - Shopping, Muskies and More!
At a mere 18 miles away, Boulder Junction is the ideal day trip for those who wish to leisurely stroll along Main street grabbing a bite to eat and a bag of goodies. With many quaint shops and taverns to choose from, this town is the perfect mini get-a-way for any day. In addition, those who are ready to learn how to catch the big one can visit the annual Musky Jamboree. This 3-day affair offers musky fishing workshops, an arts & crafts fair, live music, kids contests and so much more! If you've never been, it's about time you go!
